Learn Communication Problems in Children with Autism

Autism tends to relate to children with language problem, but apparently not all children with this autism spectrum disorder have this problem. Autism is identified when children are self-absorbed and lost in their own private world which makes them difficult to communicate with their parents or people surround them.

Since children with autism are unable to communicate or interact with others, their effort in developing language skills is stagnant. In fact, they also find it hard to communicate through eye contact, hand gestures, and facial expression. However, although children with autism have difficulties in developing their language skills, it doesn’t mean that they cannot communicate because each individual has particular ability to communicate.

Children’s ability in communication is depending on intellectual and social development. Therefore, a child with autism disorder will be able to speak or even have many vocabularies that make them have the ability to describe particular subjects.

In general, autism causes children feeling difficult to form meaningful and rhythmic words or sentences and even fail to understand body language. For further comprehension, here are some patterns of language use and behaviors in children with autism.

The visible problem found in children with autism is when they speak of something meaningless or is not related to the context of conversation. They tend to speak repetitive or rigid language like counting the numbers from one to five over and over again. They also suffer from an echolalia, a condition when they repeat words they heard continuously. When speaking, children with autism often speak in a high-pitched or singsong voice.

Speaking of the development of language skills, the uneven language development of children with autism is found. Some of them are able to read words before 5 years of age although they may not understand what they read. Others can develop a strong vocabulary very fast, whereas many of children with autism possess good memory for any information they heard or seen, for example from TV or commercials. They is conclusion derived that children with autism have hearing problem, but the truth is that they are unable to respond when someone speaks to them or calls their names.

Experts in autism spectrum disorder suggest treating the children under a number of specialists, and one of them is a speech-language pathologist supervision. The speech-language pathologist has ability to train child with autism who face voice, speech, and language disorders through an appropriate treatment program.
